Guides on a Cliff Hanger
15 Guides & 7 leaders from the Coonabarabran Waratahs and Wellington Guide Units came together for an action packed weekend out camping in the Warrumbungle NP. The theme of the camp was ‘Cliff hangers’ and the girls formed patrols with names that fitted the theme of ‘Eagles’, ‘Beacons’ and ‘Rocky Peaks’.The first night was soooo cold that the girls ended up going to bed early to keep warm. Their fabulous new tents were really put to the test keeping the curious kangaroos out of their beds.
When asked what was the best bit a definite response was ‘Abseiling’ with Mr Phil Draper and Wombat! The girls engaged in many activities such as boomerang throwing with Brown Owl (some almost came back); face painting with Kinka with a variety of cool designs of Guide trefoils, smileys, flowers, hearts and animals; and creating squirrel themed badges with Rosella for their camp blankets using fabric textas and calico swatches. Gemma Evans lead a wide game where the girls created mini campsites out of bush materials. Imaginations and skills were put to the test as the patrols modelled tents, flagpoles and campfires. These activities developed team work and leadership skills.
Campfire was held on Saturday night with lots of songs and action songs such as “Organised Chaos”, Dr Knickerbocker and many more singing into the night. Sunday afternoon saw the Guides from Wellington, Caroline, Alanah and Erin lead the colour party for the closing ceremony. Gemma played the National Anthem on her flute and Mrs T officially closed the camp after Brown Owl distributed gifts from around the world to all the delighted Guides and leaders.
A big BRAVO to Brown Owl for coordinating this big event, to Rosella, Mrs T, Kinka, Wombat, Ms Starr and Ms Greenwood for all their work before, during and after camp to give the girls such a wonderful experience. Many thanks to Mr Phil Draper for giving our dare devils a wonderful adventure abseiling (the highlight of the camp) and to all the parents who helped transport gear and girls to the campsite and return.
